Literacy Supports
The ESC offers a full range of literacy services that support districts, teachers, and families. We provide professional development, coaching, facilitation, and resources around the areas of foundational literacy, adolescent literacy, and literacy assessment, with special attention to evidence-based practices like the Science of Reading.
Foundational Literacy & Dyslexia
We offer extensive support for early literacy development, including strategies for assessment and intervention.
- Services: Professional development, coaching, and facilitation for foundational literacy instruction and assessment.
- Dyslexia Resources: Information and training related to dyslexia screening, intervention, and support, often in line with state guidelines.
- Assessment Tools: Links and resources for various phonemic awareness and phonics assessments.
Adolescent Literacy
Our adolescent literacy services focus on the continued development of reading and writing skills for students in middle and high school.
- Content Area Literacy: Strategies and frameworks for improving reading comprehension across various content areas.
- Writing Resources: Guides and professional learning focused on writing instruction for secondary students.
- Advanced Word Study: Resources focused on morphology and other advanced word study techniques.
Professional Learning
We offer a variety of professional development opportunities designed to equip educators with the latest research and best practices that includes:
- The OVESC has a district trainer in house to deliver IMSE OG+, IMSE (The Institute for Multisensory Education) OG (Orton Gillingham)+ Training. This training is a thirty hour training that includes a complete K-2/Intervention curriculum for phonics instruction and intervention.

State Initiatives and Resources
We connect districts with important state initiatives and broader literacy efforts.
- Ohio’s Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement: Information and links related to the statewide literacy framework, covering all grade levels.
- The Science of Reading: Resources, toolkits, and professional development related to evidence-based reading instruction.
- Third Grade Reading Guarantee: District and family resources related to the state’s reading guarantee policy.
